Background: The Department of Business Japanese was established in November 1988. The program is designed to meet the needs of the business community and the socio-economic development of the nation.
Curriculum: To graduate with a Bachelor degree in Japanese, a student needs to complete at least 142 credits. Among these, 33 credits are from 11 Japanese major required courses and 9 credits from major elective courses.
Unlike Japanese programs offered in other Universities, our unique program aims to prepare students to work in the Japanese business community not only with a competent use of Japanese language, but also with a solid foundation in business knowledge, and a deep understanding of the customs, culture and background of Japan. Courses like Japanese for Secretaries, Japanese for Hotels, Japanese for Airline Services, Japanese for Tourism, are very popular among the students. According to feedback from our graduates, these courses are very useful in their work and seem to be a good answer to the present job opportunities.
At present we offer 20 different courses in 57 sections with approximately 1,300 students enrolled in each semester.
Strengths: We are proud to say that the Department of Business Japanese, Faculty of Arts, Assumption University is one of the best-recognized Japanese language departments within the Japanese community inside as well as outside the country. Our students’ performance is also a credit to Assumption University. In the past years, many students received Japanese Government scholarships, including the Monbusho Scholarship, Nikkensei Scholarship, Study Tour Award for outstanding Japanese language students, and more. In August 1988 and in the year 2000, 4 students won the first and second prizes in the 25th and the 27th Japanese Speech Contest organized by the Japan Old Student Association and the Embassy of Japan.
On the career opportunities, each year questionnaires are given out to the students during the commencement rehearsal. From these questionnaire results, almost all the graduates were given positions in various companies with very attractive starting salaries. From 51 graduates, 12 work in Japanese firms, 18 work in business-related firms, 3 work in airline services, 2 work as teachers, 2 are furthering their studies in Japan, and 4 help out in their family business. In the midst of the country’s economic crisis, this is more than satisfactory.
The strongest point of our department is its tremendously vibrant teaching team. We are said to have the largest number of native Japanese speakers of all Japanese teaching institutes in Thailand. Among 11 full-time instructors, there are 7 native Japanese one Myanmar, and 3 Thais. Three qualified par-time instructors enhance the strength of the team. Students can be sure that they are in good hands. They will also enjoy students’ life at our gorgeous Suvarnabhumi Campus, a so-called “University in the Park”. They will also have a culture touch in many cultural activities organized by the Department i.e. Business Japanese Day, Japanese Speech Contest, Home-Stay Program in Japan, Summer Classes in Japan, 3- month Intensive Japanese at the University of Sacred Heart, Tokyo, Japan, Student Exchange Program with Ryokoku Unviersity, Kyoto, Japan and more.
